Chertolsky Lane is a street in central Moscow in the Khamovniki district, running between Prechistenka Street and Gagarin Lane. Originally, it was called Tsaritsynsky Lane, because it was located on the site where, in the 17th century, there was a settlement of the "Tsarina's boyar children," who served as the lower ranks of the Tsarina's court. The lane received its current name in 1922, in memory of the Chertolskaya settlement on the Chertory Stream, from the folk term chertoroy — ravine or gully carved by water. This term itself is derived from the expression "the devil dug it" (chort ryl)
