The Borobudur Temple Compounds, located in the central part of Java Island, northwest of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a relic of Mahayana Buddhist stupas. It was built by the ruling class around 750 to 850 AD and was the largest Buddhist structure in the world at that time. Later, due to a volcanic eruption, the temple complex sank and was hidden in the thick tropical jungle for nearly a thousand years. It was not discovered and cleared until the early 19th century. It is known as one of the four ancient wonders of the East, along with the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
